The Colorado Avalanche brought professional hockey to Colorado in
1995. Formerly the Quebec Nordiques, the avalanche were a quick hit
in Colorado. The Avs started play at Mc Nichols Sports arena, and
were quick to sell out nearly every game. The Avs were also quick
to please the Colorado sports fans, as they won the Stanley cup in
their inaugural year in Denver. This was the first major pro sports
champion ever to come from Colorado (beating the Broncos by 2 years).
The Avs have continued to play well throughout their stint in Denver.
They have yet to miss the playoffs, and, with the exception of one
year, have always done pretty well in the playoffs. The problem the
Avalanche have faced is that they play in the Western Conference where
the 3 powerhouses in the NHL in the late '90's play; Dallas Stars,
Detroit Red Wings and, of course, the Colorado Avalanche.
Owner Pierre Lacroix has spent the time and money to make this franchise
a winner. Many of the games best players either still play here, or
have played here since the Avs moved from Quebec. Joe Sakic, Peter
Forsberg and Patrick Roy are certainly 3 of the games elite players.
Add that to former Avs Theo Fleury, Sandis Ozolinsh and Claude Lemieux,
the roster in Colorado has always been able to boast along with the
other most talented teams in the NHL.
One of the most heated rivalry in all of sports is between the Detroit
Red Wings and the Avalanche. There is certainly no love loss between
the two! However, there has been plenty of blood loss!
The Avalanche now play at Pepsi Center. The Pepsi Center started its
use as the Avalanche' arena in 1999. The building is awe inspiring
and simply a great place to watch a hockey game. The Avalanche are
still a tuff ticket to get, but with some advanced planning you should
be able to see the Avalanche live at Pepsi Center.
